DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING

Applied Research in Industry

Arman Boyacı,

Cognira

Abstract:

Expectations from research in industry often differ significantly from those in academia. While academic research emphasizes novelty and generalization, industry research focuses on creating practical, scalable, and maintainable solutions to real-world problems. As a graduate with an advanced degree, you bring a strong ability to formulate complex problems. In a business setting, this becomes especially valuable in translating ambiguous business challenges into well-defined analytical problems and just importantly translating analytical results back into actionable business solutions. In addition, maintaining and operationalizing these solutions is a critical aspect of industry work.

In this talk, Arman Boyaci will share personal experiences and project examples to highlight these differences and provide practical insights into applied research in industry.
