Masters Program

The Department awards the degree of "Master of Science in Industrial Engineering" to eligible students who complete 24 credits in coursework and successfully defend a thesis.

Students with B.S. or B.A. degrees in Industrial Engineering or a related field can apply to the M.S. program. They are required to have at least 2.50/4.00 grade point average and to be in the top 10% or higher percentile in the Academic Staff and Graduate Education Test (ALES), or Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Applicants who pass the English proficiency test administered by Boğaziçi University, or TOEFL, or IELTS start the graduate program. Also a limited number of the students, who cannot prove English proficiency, are accepted to the English preparation class.

Rules and regulations for the M.S. program have recently changed. We will provide more information once the Senate approves new regulations.

Degree Requirements

The Master of Science program in Industrial Engineering comprises a minimum of 24 credits of course work and a thesis. The students with IE background are expected to complete the course work in two semesters, whereas the students with a non-IE background are allowed to extend their course work to three semesters since they are required to take remedial courses . The student has a maximum of 4 semesters to complete the coursework with a grade point average of 3.00, and a maximum of 6 semesters to complete the M.S. program.

All students are required to take:

  • IE 501 Optimization Techniques 1

  • IE 505 Stochastic Processes and Applications

  • IE 508 Statistical Inference

  • IE 579 Graduate Seminar

Students with non-IE backgrounds should first complete the basic industrial engineering courses that are recommended by their advisors in their first term. This remedial term may consist of the courses such as, Operations Research, Engineering Economics, Systems Simulation, Probability for Industrial Engineers, Statistics for Industrial Engineers, Supply Chain Management, and Facilities Design & Planning.

Students choose the elective courses in accordance with their research interests. The specific interest areas in the graduate program include Operations Research, Manufacturing/Production, Systems Modeling, and Financial Engineering. When a student has completed the coursework, the thesis advisor supervises the student in writing an M.S. thesis.
